The DSMR has Gone Too Far
How many of you know what the DSMR is? It’s the psychiatric manual that therapists and psychiatrists use to bill treatment for clients.
The latest label has gone too far..actually many of the labels do.
This one is orthorexia .
It’s for people who will only eat the healthiest of foods..
I can just picture the psychiatrist eating their Big Mac coming up with this one.
I can see if the person is afraid of food that doesn’t fit some unique personal guideline, and in turn they starve themselves.
Though..it also includes those who are simply passionate about their choices, and have absolutely no nutrition or weight issues.
“Other eating disorders focus on quantity of food but orthorexics can be overweight or look normal. They are solely concerned with the quality of the food they put in their bodies, refining and restricting their diets according to their personal understanding of which foods are truly ‘pure’.”
“Orthorexia is not yet a
DSM diagnosis, but academic investigation into it has begun”
This thread is for every mainstream health area that restricts freedom of thought and does it’s best to isolate it in some negative category.
Are you ORTHOEXIC
Mind you—you only need to answer 2-3 questions yes..

This is really interesting – and a little worrying that everyone that doesnt fit into a so-called ‘norm’ has a disorder of some sort!
Its like they dont want to leave people the freedom to eat what they feel good eating without giving them a label.
Yes, Laurie you do care about what you put in your body – but I dont think you strut about believing you are ‘holier than thou’ for it.
I too, care for what I put in my body – not as disciplined as you I have to say, but each to their own I say – Live and let live.
If it make you feel happy, in control of you health and daily functioning to really think about what you eat…then great for you. I agree, this is almost like a diagnosis coming from bitterness – wishing they could be as disciplined as those that are!!
You are inspiring Laurie. Keep up the good work. I admire the steps you take for great health!!!
A full and thankful heart..

Yeah it’s something, Anoushka- lol. (ridiculous) criteria. So would you think someone who lacks passion, not caring enough to do what they feel is good for them is more healthy/and or normal?
Of course you will find a population who are on some negative end of a continuum and problematic.
Though look at the criteria here.. … feeling great, attempting to plan for the things that make your life truly good is practically evil to call it an ‘issue’.
I like being aware of what big business is doing out there..Though at the same time a little disconcerting to me for those who might actually buy into labels.
Any more thoughts/feelings on infamous labeling?

It seems to me that everything has to have a name put on it or about it. to keep people in some kind of order. The “ailment described above” is so ridiculous. Were the people in the past who had no perservatives, hormones and antibotics called Orthoexic? They were called healthy. Don’t believe their street psychiatry. As for me and my house I want good health. When their sitting there gasping for air hand them another Big Mac!
Peace,
Mary

LOL! Here here Mary!
More power to the dsciplined types like Laurie – I am working on it…but I still cave over a slice of chocolate cake! Tee Hee! :o)

Lots of my discipline has come from finding out what makes me feel great.
If you ate some very sweet icing with some adulterated unknown in them, and each time you became foggy brained and less energetic-> would you still desire that icing?
I still want and like good stuff, I just use products that agree with what I’ve learned that works for me.
For those who haven’t experienced negative “side effects” from various foods ever, they might not desire such information.
My goal is to feel wonderful regularly. To do that I enjoy finding out what I like and what is good for me. It’s a fun kind of discipline, not a rigid depriving kind(:

I have a terrible sweet tooth and also am diabetic with some nerve damage…. even with all that it is hard to say no to the sweets… and equally difficult to say affirmations that denote healthy eating….. I am called a food addict and I admit that is my drug of choice…. right now I am exploring affirmations that will steer me in the right direction… love to all… Kathy

How much do you want to feel great??? How much does being healthy mean to you?? Let’s start there?

Thanks for sharing….

hello my name is Dorothy and I am addicted to garlic :)
Being off work this week I was able to catch some daytime tv and today saw Sheryl Crowe ( e or no e ?) on Rachel Ray promoting her new cook book titled “ If It Makes You Healthy “ .
Obviously her wake up call with cancer gave her the same hindsight as I had and we began to re-think what types of food we were consuming. LOL, i say fondly as she spoke of Kale chips. OMG everyone must try them!
Also since diabetes and heart disease both run in my family and seem to arise in the 50’s I watch what I eat now , hopefully it will help and I will not have the same problems as others. that is yet to be seen.
I think this new development is utterly ridiculous and the only time anything should be called out for being a disease or disorder is if it is harmful to that person or another in that persons circle of relationships.
As a wife and mother I am constantly thinking about food. I need to provide healthy snacks and lunches as well as dinners and I do the grocery shopping and cooking. My husband is willing to eat what I make occasionally but still wants his red meat now and then. My daughter currently has the best of both worlds.
I’m not there completely yet but am on my way to becoming one who only consumes food that is good for me.
I would much rather stand up in a crowd and say hello my name is dorothy and I am an orthoexic rather than I am an alcoholic, drug addict , overweight , etc. etc.
It reminds of hallmark , make up a holiday to sell more cards.
Make up a new disorder to place fear in people and get them to make an appt.
what’s next and awareness month ?
