It might be a worthwhile to prepare yourself so you aren’t taken by surprise if (when) the U.S. dollar collapses. Do you have extra food on hand? The U.S. is trying to inflate it’s way out of economic ruin. I will not work. Ever hear of the Weimar Republic? You might want to start preparing your family and friends. I’m just sayin’.

Hi Cooks! Love your threads as usual.
This is not negative this is reality now and we must prepare besides being positive.
I couldn’t agree with you more. I have been trying to be self sustaining for some time now. Started with my organic garden for my own fruits and vegetables! Have been learning some survival techniques. Also some health remedies in cases of emergency. Yes yes yes! We need to have water on hand especially for emergencies. I had already found ways of washing my clothes without any electricity which consisted of a plunger and a large plastic tub. Works great but need some real muscle power to get them clean.
I would like to see more people stop shopping at these self check out stores. I have recently seen public libraries tell you you can check out your own books using their computers. What’s gonna happen to the employees?
What are all these people gonna do without a job? What about the young people coming out of college? Majority of them have large loans to pay off how with no jobs?
Now we get recorded messages anytime we need to call a store or anyplace. Don’t we need operators and cashiers? I pray people will wake up and stop using these self check out places because things are going to get worse. I boycott all self check out stores and wait for a chasier. IT’S TIME WE ALL WAKE UP! WE CAN MAKE CHANGES IF WE ALL STICK TOGETHER!

I agree with you Godscreation…those of us who are prepared have a better chance of survuval… I haven’t had a garden in years but this year will have a small one… gotta start somewhere….
I understand what you are saying GC. There are some jobs that really do need human beings. Having an actual person answer a phone comes to mind.. It is good to keep in mind though that there are many benefits to technology that aren’t always readily apparent. Most advances in technology that reduce human labor actually create economic prosperity. Labor unions have often made arguments that advances in technology hurt the economy, where in fact advances improve the overall economy.

Dear MC I really enjoyed reading this article made me really think. My question is then what do we do with the people who do not have the education to do technological jobs? Someone has to pay here. Many people especially those who have made quite a bit of money do not like the labor unions. Why? Because they have to answer to someone for their mistreatment of their workers not all mind you. For example the the children who died in England as chimney sweeps. Someone finally stepped forward and fought for the lives of these chidren.
I have been thinking about what the article said because it is right that technology has made life easier for many of us. Yet we rely greatly on electricity to help us with technology. Some years back here in California we had to have black outs in order to save electricity. Wow! You cannot believe the fiasco it sometimes started. Example: I went to get an ice cream cone at a 711 store at the same time a man gave the cashier 20.00 to fill up his gas tank.
The black out started and I couldn’t get any ice cream because the machine could not start. The man trying to get gas could not because the pump wouldn’t work and he could not get back his 20.00 bill because the cash register could not open. This man was livid and had to get somewhere fast and could not. The poor cashier had to write him a receit for his money. So what kind of jobs can people do? Do you have any ideas? I have been thinking about this and may be stuck in old thinking.
Great questions. I wish I had great answers to give you. You bring up lots of stuff worth discussing. This might turn into quite a thread. I will try to find some good stuff to post. Here are some people you might want to look up on youtube: Thomas Sowell, Richard Epstein, Friedrich Hayek, Ludwig von Mises, Milton Friedman, Austrian Economics, Walter Williams, David Horowitz, Ayn Rand, The Cato Institute, The Federalist Society, Tom Woods. These people cut through the crap.
Energy solutions will require more drilling for oil, more nuclear power plants, and more reliance on coal. As the cost of solar panels come down we will be able to use it more and more. We will use wind power more and possibly more hydroelectric power. Over time we will have to change our living habits and become more efficient. It is ironic that so many people care so deeply about being green that the solutions that they promote are more destructive than helpful. For example, by making it more difficult for oil companies to drill for oil off of the coast of California they actually create more unsafe and potentially dangerous drilling practices. Companies simply move to areas and countries that are far less regulated. Not only does it create more pollution it hurts the U.S. economy overall from lost jobs and the other economics effects that flow through the economy. OSHA also hurts our economy, while they may have a good motive the extreme political correctness and insane regulations they put in place make it more difficult for U.S. companies to produce anything that can compete in a global economy. Labor unions also make it harder to compete. I think that eventually more of us will strive for energy independence in our own home through solar hot water, solar electricity and more efficient practices like better us of insulation, smart home design that takes advantage of the position of the sun, natural wind patterns and better building materials.

I know its only a small thing but i have changed our energy supplier to a green one that doesnt use any nuclear power and is 100% renewable .
when are people going to wake up and realise we are hurting our world so deeply .

I believe the closer we are to Earth the better we will be. Look at the terrible nuclear disaster in Japan and thousands of men, women and children who are being affected by the radiation. I do not believe in drilling for oil because their are alternative methods to use instead of just oil. There are already cars being made that can use water and vegetable oil. Big corps are fighting tooth and nail not to let this happen. They will lose money.
Water Car
All this arguing and fighting among people always has to do with money and power. People have lost the ability to think for themselves because everything is being done for them. Instant Gratification has caused homelessness, bad health and loss of creativity. If we can work together you cannot believe the happy lives we would all have.
Self Sufficient
There are tremendous possibilities to help one another and have a happy life. All we need to do is start with the first step.
Peace Mary

I just read the book “The Vortx”…. great book…. it talks a bit about false premises… one of which was the young should look up to and follow the older more experienced…. another thought was was that if we all followed our internal guidance system, our world wouldn’t have a need for governments…. now that’s a thought….
I realise I probably haven’t quoted the book as well as I could, but it is already back at the library… it is a great read and I highly reccommend id it…

I do agree that GM killed the electric car for selfish reasons, I don’t think the solution lies in not drilling for oil though. Less than 7% of our energy comes from all of the renewables combined. Not drilling for oil in the US will not prevent other countries from drilling and economic reality won’t allow us to stop using oil, coal and gas. I haven’t looked into it very closely, but using water to run a car is not as easy or cheap as it might first appear and many people have been scammed by people promoting this idea. I’m not saying absolutely that it can’t be done, I’m just highly skeptical. Japan essentially imports all of its oil and I promise you that their government would not suppress technology that would allow cars to run on water; it would not be in their self-interest. Neither would China or India and our oil companies, no matter how powerful they are with our own congress, can’t simply pay off officials in China to manipulate or suppress technology. I do think that renewable, clean energy sources are important to develop though. I LOVE solar and wind. Solar hot water is amazingly practical and affordable and we should definitely be using all of these things. Oh, I forgot to even mention geothermal energy, another amazingly practical energy source. It is amazing how much can be done through better home design also, simply by using the angle of the sun, the orientation of homes with relation to the sun, taking advantage of wind patterns, using thermal mass to collect heat, smart window design and placement, smart use of overhangs. I love all of these brilliant ideas. I am certain that you can find lots of great info on youtube. Have you ever heard of papercrete? Look it up, you will probably fall in love with it – amazingly practical. I also like strawbale homes and adobe and underground homes. There really are sooooo many things we can do to be more efficient. Every year in Washington D.C. there is a competition where universities from around the world vie for honors by designing and building super efficient homes. I think it is called the solar decathlon. What is so great about many of these ideas is that they are not complicated and anyone can take advantage of them, especially if the government gets out of the way. Many ideas are practical not only here, but, and even especially in the developing world.
