Experiencing and expressing gratitude is an important part of any spiritual practice. It opens the heart and activates positive emotion centers in the brain. Regular practice of gratitude can change the way our brain neurons fire into more positive automatic patterns. The positive emotions we evoke ***can soothe distress and broaden our thinking patterns so we develop a larger and more expansive view of our lives. Gratitude is an emotion of connectedness, _which reminds us we are part of a larger universe with all living things.

Gratitude can lead to feelings of love, appreciation, generosity, and compassion, which further open our hearts  and  help rewire our brains to fire in more positive ways.

***~article~*** The Biochemistry of Gratitude

Well-known physician and author Christiane Northrup strongly encourages gratitude of all types. She reminds us, “No matter what’s going on in the world, the economy, or the news, you have the power within you to create the biochemistry of gratitude right now.” Dr. Northrup explains that when you hold feelings of thankfulness for at least 15 to 20 seconds, a variety of subtle and beneficial physiological changes take place in your body:

  • Levels of the stress hormones cortisol and norepinephrine decrease, producing a cascade of beneficial metabolic changes, such as an enhanced immune system.
  • Coronary arteries relax, thus increasing the blood supply to your heart.
  • Heart rhythm becomes more harmonious, positively affecting your mood and all bodily organs.
  • Breathing becomes deeper, thus raising the oxygen level of your tissues.

So spend some time feeling gratitude for your body, for your family and friends, for all that is wonderful in your life. It will pay off in better health!

***_Appreciation Thoughts of the Day_***

    • ** You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law: the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given you. Sarah Ban Breathnach

The Benefits Of Adding Gratitude To Your Life An attitude of gratitude adds more to your life than just personal happiness Post published by Sherrie Bourg Carter Psy.D. on Nov 25, 2013 in High Octane Women

Positive emotions, such as gratitude, serve as a protective factor that enhances our capability to handle adverse life experiences (Wood, et al. 2007 ).

People who keep gratitude lists are more likely to make progress toward important personal goals (Emmons ).

How To Be More Grateful
Some people just seem to be born with an attitude of gratitude. They’re pleasant, always express gratitude, and just seem appreciative of everything that happens in their lives. For those who are not lucky enough to have inherited the gratitude gene, expressing gratitude may take a bit more effort, but it can be accomplished fairly easily by making gratitude a habit. Here are five ways, offered by Dr. Robert Emmons (link is external), one of the world’s leading researchers on gratitude, to strengthen that habit:

Gratitude
Gratitude is a powerful practice. The act of gratitude is powerful because it reminds us of what we have and what we’ve achieved. It also forces us into the present moment, rather than allowing us to live in the past or the future. And the present moment is the only moment available for creating, expressing and feeling life.

We have a tendency to focus on what we don’t have, what we haven’t yet achieved and what’s not working in our lives.
When we focus on our accomplishments we begin to see how much we have now. We feel good, present, alive. This leaves us more confident and increases our energy

The increased confidence makes us more willing to put ourselves out there and take risks. This in turn has the potential to offer us new experiences, connections and exciting outcomes.

Energetically feeling good makes us more attractive. Maybe you’ve heard of the law of attraction – that like attracts like. That means if you are in a positive frame of mind, you attract more good stuff to you. Perhaps you’ve experienced days when it feels like you’re in the flow and nothing can go wrong or days when nothing seems to go right. The universal law behind that is that whatever level you are vibrating at will attract similar stuff. If you vibrate positively, good stuff happens. When your vibration is lower or negative, things aren’t so good. The practice of gratitude raises your vibration. In general your energy level goes up. When your energy increases, others are likely to notice and respond positively too.

If you’d like to take on a gratitude practice for the month, here’s a simple 5-step gratitude practice process.

  • ** * 1. Pick a day to start.
Picking your start date has the effect of real commitment. [date] is a great day to start and continue throughout the month.

  • ** * 2. Set aside time each day
Setting aside a specific time of day for doing your gratitude practice makes it easier for you to follow through and actually do it. The end of the day is a great time offering an opportunity for reflection on the day, but any time is good. If setting a time doesn’t work, just ensure you find a few minutes each day.

  • ** * 3. Write it down
Write a list with at least 1 thing you are grateful for. Writing it down makes it more real, more focused and easier to stick with. Start with this sentence “Today I am grateful for…” Then fill in the blank with whatever you can come up with. It’s likely that some days your answer will roll easily from your pen. Other days the words might not come. If you’re stuck you might consider what others say brings them happiness – the sunshine, a sunset, their pet, their family, their kids. There’s also the opportunity to be grateful for the earth, the trees, the birds or your ancestors – those who brought you to the place you stand today.

  • ** * 4. Feel it
Once you’ve written what you are grateful for, close your eyes and feel the gratitude for what you wrote. Give thanks silently or out loud. The act of feeling the gratitude allows you to embody it, which gives it more power. It also increases the positive impact the gratitude practice has on you.
  • ** * 5. Share it
If you can find someone to partner with when doing this practice it will keep you accountable and make it more fun. Plus being in community always helps with any journey.
