When You Meet Yourself

Dear, ?
What would you do? What would you think? If you ran into yourself today would you like you? If you met you at a party would you like you? Is the you you see – the you you meet – is that you the real you or the you you present to the world? Do you even know who the real you is? Have you forgotten? Is the real you somewhere inside you bouncing around in a giant shell? Can you even hear the real you? I think small children can, but do we lose it somewhere as we grow up? Is the facade you wear dependent on who you are with or where you are at? Wouldn’t you like the real you better? Maybe the real you is hiding because you doesn’t want real you to upset someone’s image of you? Maybe they would like the real you better? I don’t know. Maybe they wouldn’t. Maybe the real you doesn’t like what you are doing to meet someone else’s expectations of who you are supposed to be. “Well, THAT isn’t a good idea”, they say. “This is how you are supposed to make a living”. Or whatever. Maybe they have your best interest at heart, maybe they don’t. A real friend always wants what is best for you, and maybe you should consider what they say, but they ain’t you. They probably ain’t even them. There is a good chance that even they don’t know who they are. You could be two completely fake people having a completely sincere conversation and neither one of you is even there. Maybe the real you and the real them could change the world. I don’t know. Even if they couldn’t change the world; wouldn’t it be nice just to set them free. I’m sick of the doppelganger slave-masters. I’m going to Kinko’s. I’m going to make posters…

Sincerely,
Jeff Dumas
