I was wondering if any of you guys have Dyslexia. I have Dyslexia, but never realized how lucky I was in my early education until recently. My later education was another story. I wonder how many of you graduated from high school without ever having even met with a guidance counselor. Anyway, I guess I had a pretty good teacher when I was in the second grade, because she recognized what I had and my parents switched me to a school with a class for us “special” kids. During the second and third grade I went each day for one period to the “special ed” class. There I worked every day with flash cards and did exercises that included practice in writing and walking on a balance beam. I was never made to feel stupid by anyone and I was never picked on by any of my classmates. After the third grade I was no longer in the special ed class. I have read before that dyslexia can be inherited and that it is predominant in left-handed males. I don’t know if that is true, but I am a left-handed male. I am really thankful that I was in a school system that recognized what I had back then in the early 70’s. Back then most kids would have just been written off as being slow and today I think many kids are bullied for being dyslexic, and God forbid you are stuck in an inner-city school with a learning disability. I remember seeing some things ‘backwards’, if that makes any sense. Technically I still see lots of things backwards, but my brain ‘learned’ how to turn things around. It is really kind of amazing. When I see an ‘E’, it looks to me like a ‘3’, but I am no longer aware that it looks like a ‘3’. To me it just looks like an ‘E’, the way everyone else sees it (I think). It can be tricky learning to see lots of letter combinations like “ie” and so on, but it certainly can be done. I am living proof. Anyway, if any of you know of any kids that are prone to write letters backwards it is really worth it to find out if they have dyslexia. There may be other things you can look for, but I know that that was one of the things that my teacher caught when I was really young and I am grateful that she did.
