★Where Did All the Apples Go? (Food for Thought)

One hundred years ago there were between fifteen and sixteen thousand varieties of apples in the U.S. Yes, you heard that right 15,000. Today there are around 3000. And how many can you find in your grocery store? Eleven. What happened to all the apples? Disappearing Apples

And what about The Case of the Disappearing Bees
Albert Einstein once said: “If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination … no more men!”
Actually, we don’t know if Einstein actually said this or if it is just a myth.

Ever heard of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.

I’m Alright
Life Less Ordinary

It’s not just apples and bees. Grains are the biggest issue imho. We are totally reliant on a few varieties of wheat and rice. Sure, they are bred to be disease resistant, but the best way to be resistant to disease is genetic diversity. This is as true in humans as it is in plants.

What’s worse is companies like Monsanto creating seeds that need their proprietary products to germinate. People raping the soil by planting high yield GM crops that the environment can’t sustain, depleting the soil of its nutrients, then moving on to somewhere else and doing it again, leaving behind a wasteland that can’t support life.

And then there is all the issues with mistreated animals pumped full of hormone, battery hens that don’t have room to move, cows that are fed the ground up remains of their deceased (causing mad cow disease, etc)

I’m a big fan of the slow and organic food movements.

Yes I have heard of this seed bank my niece told me about it. But who are the seeds going to be given too? We are already in a crisis.

My niece is a molecular biologist and said that Europe will not buy seeds from the U.S. because of the genetically modified organisms. Or Frankenfoods!

The PLU codes are as follows:

Conventionally grown fruit consists of 4 numbers

Organically grown fruit has 5 numbers prefaced by the number 9

GM fruit has 5 numbers prefaced by the number 8.
