BE YOU

Executive Brain 🧠 slowing

happens

when

  • Your brain is stressed and tired.
    - Stress hormones (like cortisol) make planning and choosing hard.
    - Low sleep, low blood sugar, and overwhelm reduce attention and memory.
    - Too many tasks and decisions overload working memory.

BE YOU

“We would accomplish many more things if we did not think of them as impossible.” – Vince Lombardi

Simple reasons

  • Stress → brain shifts resources to immediate survival, not planning.
  • Fatigue → reduced capacity to hold and manipulate information.
  • Hunger/dehydration → weaker concentration and slower thinking.
  • Too many choices → decision paralysis from limited working memory.
  • Emotional load (worry, grief) → consumes attention and executive resources.

What that looks like

  • Trouble starting tasks.
  • Big tasks feel impossible.
  • You forget steps or lose track.
  • You can’t pick between options.
  • Frequent task-switching and procrastination.
  • Feeling overwhelmed by simple plans.

Quick fixes (do any 1–3 now)

  1. 5-minute start: set a timer for 5 minutes and do the smallest step.
  2. Single next action: write one clear next step (e.g., “open document,” not “work on report”).
  3. Eat + hydrate: have a snack with protein and water.
  4. Two-choice rule: limit options to 2 to decide faster.
  5. Short rest: close eyes for 5–10 minutes or take a 10–20 minute walk.

Short daily habits (5–15 minutes each)

  • Morning plan (5 min): pick 1–3 priorities and the one next action for each.
  • Energy checks (2 min, 3x/day): note hunger, tiredness, mood; address the biggest deficit.
  • Decision limits (5 min): batch trivial choices (meals, clothes) or use defaults.
  • Evening dump (10 min): empty your mind into a list for tomorrow.

Simple systems to reduce load

  • Defaults: create go-to routines (meals, morning, email times).
  • Chunking: break tasks into 10–30 minute chunks with a single next action.
  • Externalize memory: use one simple to-do list app or paper inbox; capture everything immediately.
  • Rule-based decisions: make rules (e.g., “if X, then Y”) to automate choices.
  • Templating: keep templates for repeated tasks (emails, reports, meetings).

One-week plan to reboot executive function
Day 1 — Reset basics: sleep target, hydrate, protein-rich meals; pick 3 priorities and one next action each.
Day 2 — Capture + clarify: carry a notebook/app and record every task; convert each into a single next action.
Day 3 — Time blocks: schedule two 25–50 minute focused blocks for priorities with 10-min breaks.
Day 4 — Reduce choices: set defaults for meals/clothes and limit decisions to two options.
Day 5 — Delegate/delete: pick 3 tasks to delegate or remove.
Day 6 — Rest and review: take longer breaks, review what worked.
Day 7 — Habitize: choose two habits from above to continue and schedule them daily.
